Waldrep, Ph.D who wrote the book Becoming an Architect: A Guide to Careers in Design and moderated similar panels at other conventions such as the 2011 AIA National Convention.

The overall convention was invigorating. It not only re-energized my spirits, but helped show me some directions that I can take my career. I also had the opportunity to network and talk with some colleagues that I have not seen in the past year or so, as well as meet a couple of up and coming celebrities, the creators of the popular web comic Architexts. Therefore, until next years convention I am looking forward to getting more involved in the architecture profession again, even if it is just participating in AIA events and meetings.

About this time last year I had the pleasure to introduce founder of Architecture 2030, Ed Mazria as one of the 2009 AIA Ohio Valley Regional Convention keynote speakers and observe him and our other jurors judge the final round of the 2009 AIA Ohio Affordable Green Home Design Competition. I also presented about the competition and handed out the awards at the conventions awards banquet.

Last year the presentation was about the results of almost a year’s worth of planning and preparation with three different Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout Ohio. Giving our attendants the background of the competition as well as a more in depth look into some of our entrant’s submissions with incites from one of the participating habitat affiliates on how the competition would help them to move forward.

Again this year I was asked to present at the AIA Ohio Convention that was held these past couple of days in Toledo to provide a follow up to the results, as the intent was that each of the three category winning designs was to get built, and it is my pleasure to state that all 3 designs are getting built. Two are well under construction, and one is awaiting a permit. This year I was joined by one of our winning teams and habitat for humanity representative to discuss their experiences during and after the competition. Because the intent of the competition was to give younger un-registered architect a chance to take hold of a project and work directly for a client and learn more about energy efficient design. As well as provide habitat for humanity a new set of well designed prototypical homes that is more energy efficient and more aesthetically pleasing. We had a good turn out with some good information being shared by our design team on how it helped them progress and learn as well as how the competition helped one habitat affiliate bring community members together as well as foster discussion with other habitat affiliates throughout the state.

Overall the competition exceeded my expectations. Because I was able to create an opportunity like I had on the LEED Platinum home for someone else, giving them an opportunity to learn about high performance design and work with a worthy organization. And not only did it help the three habitat for humanity affiliates, it helped all of the Ohio affiliates by increasing communication, coordination and a greater awareness of affordable high performance design.

So feel free to check out our presentations and follow the progress of the Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity affiliate as they track their progress.

AIA OHIO AFFORDABLE GREEN HOME DESIGN COMPETITION

It has been a difficult but rewarding experience to organize and coordinate an event like this. My only hope at this time is that we receive a good amount of submissions and that we can raise enough money to provide the stipends necessary for our winning design teams to produce final documents of their designs.

So I encourage you to visit the competition website at www.aiaohiogreenhome.com and consider entering if you are eligible.

After 3 long years of volunteer work the N. 21st Street project received a Platinum certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) under the LEED for Homes Pilot program on February 18th, 2009. It is the first Platinum home in Ohio and only the 17th within the country in the affordable category at the time of certification.

This project was pushed forward by some very dedicated volunteers and a very patient owner. The house was constructed by the Home B.A.S.E. Foundation which takes high school seniors out of the class room to build homes for the working poor as part of their English, Government and Technology education programs. Roger Beck, a technology teacher, general contractor and the foundations founding member led the charge to build central Ohio’s first affordable green home. The Columbus Housing Partnership has been an integral part of the process. As the owner, they provided the initial home design from their stock set of plans provided to them by Sullivan Bruck Architects (Architect of Record).

From there a team was put together to review the plans and construction details of the original home design. One of the primary goals of this project was to show that any home can be a green home. So with some minor modifications by the Architect of Record to stack the plumbing, I was given the task to modify the envelope details and recreate the set of construction documents. Meanwhile Matthew Leasure of Kinzelman Kline Gossman and Vinnie Tremante of Williams Creek Consulting produced an amazing site plan that allows 98% of all rainwater to stay on our site as well as selected all Ohio native plants.

At the beginning of the project, we were only targeting a Silver rating. However we were given opportunities to help push the envelope while sticking to the idea of using off the shelf products and technologies. In addition to using standard construction techniques. Obviously these donations as well as volunteer labor affected the overall cost, which at this time we do not know what the final construction cost is. Therefore, at this time we are retrieving the value of our donations and plan on generating a cost analysis of what products were premiums to the project and see how they may have affected our overall rating if at all.

In the coming weeks I will be pulling together a few more posts that will discuss some of the stratagies that were used in the design and construction of this home. In the meantime you can check out the press release and some of the other coverage that this home has received.

Well I have some good news to report. I have been spearheading an effort to start a design competition for an affordable green/energy efficient home for the local Habitat for Humanity chapter to build.

Well to my dismay, the local American Institute or Architects (AIA) chapter was not that thrilled with the idea. So I decided to take the path of least resistance and had the idea presented to the AIA Ohio board. So to say the least, the idea was well received and I will now be spearheading the planning for a state wide competition that has the potential to benefit ALL of the Ohio Habitat for Humanity chapters. And on top of that, we will be partnering with Green Energy Ohio in this effort to bring more energy efficient homes to Ohio’s working poor.

So check back regularly as I will periodically post updates on the progress of the competition planning.

Well September is off to a great start so far. Last week I was informed that the LEED home that I have been volunteering so much of time for will be featured on this years central Ohio solar tour and Green Energy Ohio (GEO) will be hosting a Gala at the Governors mansion. Which I have been invited to attend because of my involvement on this project. You can see a picture of the home on this issue of GEO’s quarterly magazine. http://www.greenenergyohio.org/page.cfm?pageID=1967

Other good news that I recieved is that tomorrow after 2 long years of waiting, 3 more LEED homes will begin construction up in Cleveland. A ground breaking ceremony will held tomorrow (09/09/08).

http://www.cclandtrust.org/News.asp?id=80

These homes were created as a result of the Emerging Green Designers Symposium hosted by the Cleveland Green Building Coalition (http://www.symhome.net/php/clevelandgreencoalition.php). So with these 3 homes under construction, that will make a total of 4 green/high performance homes that have been built as a result of this Symposium. I am hoping to receive pictures from James Ptacek, who is the one that designed one of the homes that will be constructed as well as worked with the organizations involved to create the construction documents.
